One American Center at 6th and Congress opens as Austin’s tallest building, rising to 400 ft, ushering in an era of downtown revitalization.

December 1984

7 wooly mammoth skeletons unearthed at the construction site for 301 Congress Ave.  Austin’s Trammell Crow Company builds a scaffold walkway around the “dig site” and opens it to the public for viewing.

1989

Mopac northern extension (under US 183 to FM 1325 (aka Burnet Rd) opens.

1990

ATX Population (per US Census Bureau) 465,622.

July 1999

Liberty Lunch, the Beloved Live Music Venue and Dance Floor, closes to make way for the CSC office building at 405 W 2nd Street.

May 23, 1999

Austin Bergstrom Airport first flights take off from the repurposed US Bergstrom Airforce Base, forever closing the iconic Mueller Airport.
